Preparing for the Future of Digital Invoicing in the Netherlands

Preparing for the Future of Digital Invoicing in the Netherlands

The Dutch government has taken an important step towards the further digitalisation of financial processes. In its recently published Contourenbrief elektronisch factureren en rapporteren, the government outlines its vision for the future of electronic invoicing and digital reporting. The initiative aims to reduce administrative burdens, improve data quality, and enable more efficient information exchange.

The proposed approach will extend beyond cross-border transactions. Electronic invoicing will also become mandatory for domestic B2B transactions, alongside digital reporting requirements.

Digital reporting will also apply to Intra-Community transactions, bringing additional reporting requirements for businesses involved in cross-border trade within the EU.

The government outlines the following timeline for these future obligations:

  • 1 July 2030: B2B e-invoicing and digital reporting of Intra-Community transactions
  • 1 July 2031: Domestic B2B invoicing and digital reporting

We are closely monitoring these developments and will continue to keep our clients informed about their practical implications and the steps organisations can take to prepare.
